I get some version of that question almost every week. The honest answer isn't satisfying, because "better" depends on what you're trying to fix. These two are close cousins. Same receptor, similar structure, same era. But they behave differently enough in real bodies that picking the wrong one can leave a man standing in his kitchen at 11 p.m. eating cereal out of the box, wondering why the scale is moving the wrong way.

So let's compare them the way I would in the office. Mechanism first, then fit.

What Are GHRP-6 and GHRP-2, Exactly?

GHRP-6 and GHRP-2 are synthetic growth hormone releasing peptides. Both are short hexapeptides that mimic ghrelin at the GHS-R1a receptor in the pituitary and hypothalamus. Neither one is growth hormone. They prompt your own pituitary to release its own GH in pulses, and that distinction matters more than most men realize.

Ghrelin is the hormone your stomach makes when it's empty. Most people know it as the hunger signal, but it has a second job that gets far less attention: it binds a receptor in the pituitary and triggers growth hormone release. In the 1980s and 90s researchers built small peptides to exploit that job on purpose. GHRP-6 came first, GHRP-2 followed, refined to hit the GH side harder.

Both are given subcutaneously, both clear fast (half-life in minutes, not hours), and both produce a pulse rather than a steady level. That pulsatility is the point. Your pituitary evolved to release GH in bursts, mostly during deep sleep, and peptides that respect that rhythm are gentler on the feedback loops than injecting recombinant HGH. How Much Growth Hormone Does Each One Actually Release?

Milligram for milligram, GHRP-2 is the stronger releaser. Comparative work generally puts it somewhere around two to three times more potent than GHRP-6 for stimulating GH output. But potency and usefulness aren't the same thing, and the ceiling on both is set by what your own pituitary is willing to give up.

That last point gets skipped constantly. A secretagogue only releases what's in the tank. Good pituitary reserve, and GHRP-2 pulls a bigger pulse than GHRP-6 at the same dose. Poor reserve, and doubling the signal doesn't accomplish much. Louder knock, same size house.

There's also a saturation point. Past a certain dose, both stop producing proportionally larger pulses and start producing more of everything you didn't want. More dose is not more result, a lesson men usually learn expensively.

The number I actually track is IGF-1, drawn four to six weeks in. GH itself is nearly useless as a single random draw because it pulses. Why Does GHRP-6 Make You So Hungry?

Because it's the more faithful ghrelin mimic of the two. Ghrelin drives appetite, and GHRP-6 activates that arm of the receptor strongly. Plenty of men feel a sharp, almost urgent hunger within twenty to thirty minutes of a dose. GHRP-2 produces some of this too, just noticeably less of it.

This one difference decides the choice for a lot of the men I see. Think about who walks into a men's health clinic in Southlake. Most are carrying fifteen to forty pounds they'd like to lose. Handing that man a peptide that makes him ravenous before bed works against him, and no amount of GH out-runs a nightly 900-calorie detour. If midsection weight is the real problem, the belly fat that won't go away usually traces back to insulin and testosterone long before GH.

But flip the patient. A man recovering from surgery with no appetite, an older patient losing weight he can't afford to lose, a genuinely underweight guy who has never eaten enough: for those men the appetite effect isn't a side effect. It's the reason you'd pick GHRP-6 at all.

Do These Peptides Raise Cortisol and Prolactin?

Both can, and GHRP-2 tends to do it slightly more at higher doses. The effect is dose-dependent, not automatic. At conservative doses most men see very little movement in either. Push the dose chasing a bigger pulse and that's usually when prolactin and cortisol start drifting upward.

Neither is as selective as something like ipamorelin, which was designed specifically to leave cortisol and prolactin alone. That's why ipamorelin became the default in most modern protocols. GHRP-6 and GHRP-2 are older tools, and older tools tend to be blunter.

What I Watch on Labs

Baseline, then repeat at four to six weeks: IGF-1, prolactin, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HbA1c. The glucose panel isn't optional. Growth hormone is counter-regulatory to insulin, nudging blood sugar up and insulin sensitivity down. In a man with a fasting insulin of 14 and a waistline to match, that's a trade worth thinking hard about.

If a man tells me he's more wired at night or recovering worse instead of better, I'll add a cortisol assessment. Which Peptide Fits Which Man?

GHRP-6 fits men who need to gain, who are underweight or recovering, and who won't be derailed by an appetite surge. GHRP-2 fits men who want the GH pulse without the hunger, particularly anyone in a fat-loss phase. For most men over 40, though, neither is where I'd start.

GHRP-6 tends to make sense when

  • You're underweight or struggling to eat enough to support training
  • You're recovering from surgery, illness, or a long layoff with a suppressed appetite
  • Sleep and connective tissue recovery are the goal and body fat isn't a concern

GHRP-2 tends to make sense when

  • You want GH release during a calorie deficit and can't afford a hunger spike
  • You want more output per unit of peptide while keeping the dose modest
  • Your nutrition is already dialed in and you don't want a variable fighting you

Here's the part men don't want to hear. Most of the guys asking me about GH peptides are actually describing low testosterone, poor sleep, or early insulin resistance. Flat energy, softer body composition, worse recovery. Those symptoms overlap almost perfectly with what men blame on declining growth hormone, and they're far more measurable and more treatable. Why Neither One Should Be Run Alone

GHRPs pull one lever. A GHRH analog like CJC-1295 or sermorelin pulls a different one. Used together the resulting pulse is substantially larger than either produces on its own, which is why nearly every serious protocol pairs them. Running a GHRP by itself leaves a good chunk of the potential effect unused.

The physiology is straightforward once you see it. GHRH tells the pituitary to make and release GH. The GHRP arm simultaneously suppresses somatostatin, the brake your body keeps pressed on GH release most of the day. This is the uncomfortable part. Neither GHRP-6 nor GHRP-2 is FDA-approved, and the tightening of compounding rules over the past few years has pushed most of these peptides out of legitimate pharmacies. What's left circulating online is research-grade material with no reliable guarantee of purity, dose, or sterility.

Get baseline labs. IGF-1, fasting insulin and glucose, a full hormone panel including free testosterone, and thyroid. Then fix your sleep, because most natural GH release happens during slow-wave sleep and no peptide compensates for six broken hours a night.
